Tips for Photographing Your Documents

Use Good Lighting

Natural daylight works best. Avoid flash, which can create glare and shadows that obscure text.

Hold Camera Steady

Blurry photos are difficult to transcribe. Use a flat surface or tripod if possible. Take multiple shots.

Capture the Whole Page

Include margins and any notes in the margins. Sometimes crucial information is written at the edges.

Photograph Flat

Lay the document flat if possible. If it's in a book, press it as flat as you safely can without damaging it.

High Resolution

Use your phone or camera's highest quality setting. Larger file sizes are fine—detail matters more than file size.

Multiple Angles

If part of the document is difficult to read, take close-up shots of problem areas from different angles.

Don't worry if your photos aren't perfect—I can often work with less-than-ideal images. Just do your best and I'll let you know if I need better quality.

What to Include in Your Email

To help me give you an accurate quote quickly, please include:

  • Your document images (attached as JPG, PNG, or PDF)
  • Type of document if you know it (e.g., "will," "property deed," "letter")
  • Approximate date if known
  • Any context that might help (e.g., "from my family archive," "found at National Archives")
  • Your timeline if you need it urgently
  • Your name and location (helps me understand any regional spellings or terms)

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly will you respond?

Usually within a few hours during UK business hours. Always within 24 hours even on weekends. If you haven't heard back, check your spam folder or try the alternative email address.

Do you work with international clients?

Absolutely! Most of my clients are in the USA, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand researching British, Irish, and Scottish ancestry. I'm based in England, so I'm ideally positioned to understand UK historical documents. PayPal handles international payments easily—you can pay in USD, AUD, CAD, or any currency, and I quote in GBP (£). Time zones work perfectly: send your document in the evening (your time), and I'll have your quote by the next morning.

I'm in the USA/Australia—can you handle American dollars/Australian dollars?

Yes! PayPal automatically converts currencies. I quote in British Pounds (£), but you pay in your local currency and PayPal handles the conversion. For reference: a typical will transcription (£35-50) equals roughly $45-64 USD or $70-100 AUD depending on exchange rates—significantly less than American transcription services which typically charge $75-150 USD.

What if my document is in a different language?

I specialise in English-language documents and can handle Latin phrases commonly found in English legal records. For documents in other languages, I can recommend specialist translators.

How does payment work?

Once your transcription is complete, I'll send you the first page as a PDF preview so you can verify the quality and accuracy. Upon payment via PayPal or bank transfer, you'll receive the complete transcription as an editable Word document. This ensures you're completely satisfied before paying.

Can I speak to you directly?

I work primarily via email to ensure I can give each enquiry proper attention and maintain clear records of our discussion. Email also allows me to review your documents immediately when providing a quote. Please contact me at info@heritagescript.com.
